06 — Your idea

From Problem to AI Solution

7 min read

The best AI ideas start with a real problem, not with the technology. This chapter gives you a simple framework to shape your idea for the NeuraViz AI Challenge, from your first description to a working proof of concept.

Step 1: Start with the problem

Describe a specific problem, who faces it, and why it matters. "Farmers lose crops" is vague. "Small apple growers in Kashmir often detect scab disease too late, losing part of their harvest" is specific, measurable and human.

  • Who is affected, and how many people?
  • What happens today, and why is it not good enough?
  • What would a better outcome look like?

Step 2: Ask whether AI is the right tool

AI is most useful when a task involves patterns that are hard to write as rules, such as recognising images, understanding language or predicting from many signals. If a simple rule, form or spreadsheet would solve the problem, say so. Knowing when not to use AI is a sign of good judgement.

Step 3: Check the data

What data would your system need? Does it exist, can you get it legally and ethically, and is it representative of the people you want to help? (See Chapter 3.)

Step 4: Design the solution

Input

What goes in? A photo, text, sensor reading.

AI model

What does it do? Classify, predict, generate.

Output

What comes out? A diagnosis, alert, summary.

User action

Who uses it, and what do they do next?

Step 5: Define success and risks

Choose a measure of success that matters to users, such as "detect 9 out of 10 infected leaves" or "cut form-filling time by half". Then list the risks: what happens if the AI is wrong, who could be harmed, and how you would keep people safe (see Chapter 5).

Step 6: Build a small proof of concept

A proof of concept is a small, early version that shows your core idea can work. It does not need to be perfect or complete. It needs to show that the key part of your solution is feasible, and what you learned along the way.

How this maps to the challenge

Challenge stageWhat to focus on
Stage 2: Submit your ideaSteps 1-2: a clear problem, the people affected, and why AI helps.
Stage 3: Proof of conceptSteps 3-5: data, solution design, success measures and risks.
Stage 4: Final submissionStep 6: your working proof of concept, results and lessons learned.

A simple template for your idea

Problem: [who] struggles with [what] because [why].
Solution: an AI system that takes [input] and produces [output] so that [user] can [action].
Impact: success means [measurable result].
Responsibility: we will manage [main risk] by [safeguard].

Key takeaways

  • Start with a specific, human problem, not with the technology.
  • Use AI where patterns are hard to capture with simple rules.
  • Plan your data, design, success measure and risks.
  • A proof of concept proves the core idea can work.
